Stirling Lions of Western Australia Become first Oceania/Asia Partner Club


April 21, 2010 - Stirling Lions of Western Australia have become the first partner club for the West Ham United International Academy in Oceania/Asia.

Club President Don Evans said "This relationship with one of the best Academy systems in the world is a massive boost for young Australian footballers who wish to play football in the best league in the world. The opportunity that now exists with our affiliation with West Ham is to provide talented players with a stage to demonstrate their ability during coaching clinics later this year, that will be run jointly by West Ham and Stirling Lions coaching staff under the watchfull eye of Hammers Director of Coaching in Australia Mr. Mike Leigh." 

 

Evans went onto say, "It would be a dream for another Stan Lazarides to make the trek to the Boleyn Ground and make a career out of football. Our Australian youngsters are well disciplined and have the hunger to make it abroad, so our club is very excited by this fantastic partnership with the West Ham United International Academy."


Background History

The Stirling Lions are a proud and historic Premier League soccer club based at Macedonia Park in Balcatta, Western Australia with over 400 players and a further 500 members of the Macedonian community of WA who are members of the local community and club. The club has been in existence since 1958 and has evolved from an ethnic community base to a totally integrated community based club with no less than 28 nationalities represented within the teams.

 

Current News

Since the introduction of a home grown academy five years ago the club has developed many fine young footballers who are now plying their trade at the highest levels. The Kings academy and Director of coaching Mr Michael Lyons (former Everton legend) have been the catalyst for this great achievement with three Stirling Lions players forming the heart of the very successful Perth Glory Youth team that is playing in the Y League Australian National competition. Captain of the team Steven Hesketh, vice captain, Dean Evans and Ludo Boi all came through Lions’ junior ranks and are now appear ready to take the next step into full time pro football thanks to the teaching and opportunity provided at the club. The club is very proud of young 16 year old Dylan Tombides (pictured) who has been in outstanding form with the West Ham United youth sides overseen by Hammers Academy Director Tony Carr. Prior to moving to London, Dylan played for Stirling Lions junior teams.
